Windows Vista includes further down the list of advanced folder settings a checkbox labeled " Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" - this option is separate from the other option to show hidden files and folders, and the latter will only affect files and folders marked as hidden by users, while leaving critical Windows files and folders hidden - as they should. If you reset your folder settings to their default, and choose Do not show hidden files and folders, the folder on the left would remain completely hidden to unsuspecting users. Here are two folders displayed in Windows Vista: the folder on the left is set to be hidden the folder on the right is a normal folder. Semi-transparent or translucent folders in Windows XP and Windows Vista Folders set as hidden will now be displayed in semi transparency. Select Show hidden files and folders (" Do not show hidden files and folders" is selected by default), and click OK to accept your change of folder settings. Select the View tab in the Folder Options dialog: under the scrollable listing of Advanced Settings, you will find an entry labeled " Hidden files and folders". In Windows Vista, go to Organize > Folder and search Options. In Windows XP, go to Tools > Options to open the Folder Options dialog (the same can be done in Vista with Alt+T,O). To open Windows Explorer and customize your folder settings, either hold down the Windows logo key and press E (as in Explorer), or right-click on the Start button and choose Explore. Note: If you have not removed the virus from your system then there is good reason to believe that the virus itself is preventing you from making any such that so as to prevent its own demise. All hidden files and folders are not visible by default by changing some folder settings, you will be able to see hidden files and folders in translucence: this is Windows' way of showing you the files in questions, while letting you know that they are set to be hidden from view. While Windows Explorer expects to be able to set a DWORD type for the value, the Virus will have changed the registry type to a Reg_SZ, meaning that the system is unable to read to or write to the value – hence you are unable to save your preference change after you have removed the virus from your system. The virus will have modified the default property value of the registry flag responsible for specifying your preference. Otherwise you are frankly wasting your time by troubleshooting the problem. You need to ensure that you have fully disinfected your system using AntiVirus and AntiSpyware software before making the changes to restore the functionality of the Folder Options applet. You can use anything after the colon as a secret word, the key is that there can’t be any spaces between the first filename and the colon. This is invariably caused by a virus infection or spyware such as (but by no means exclusive to) W32/DKR.worm. In order to use this feature, you’ll have to open a command prompt and use the following syntax: notepad SomeFile.txt:SecretWordHere.txt. No matter which of the options you chose your system will not display hidden files through Windows Explorer, and will not save the “Show hidden files and folders” setting. When attempting to show hidden files in the Windows Folder Options settings window, the bivariate “So not show hidden files and folders” / “Show hidden files and folders” radio buttons do not have a pre-selected value. ![]()
